The Priory of Sion and Opus Dei are the two organizations central to The DaVinci Code. We saw yesterday that the Priory is based on fabrication and myth. What of Opus Dei?
This organization, named "the work of God" in Latin, figures prominently in Mr. Brown's plot. The novel describes the movement as chauvinistic in the extreme. But even critics of the organization do not make such accusations. One of the crucial characters in the novel is called a "monk" in Opus Dei. But Opus Dei has no monks whatever. Members of the group are understandably upset with the novel's unfair depiction of their movement.
More than 30 million people are expected to see The DaVinci Code in movie form after it is released tomorrow. If you go, know that you're watching a story which is based entirely on fiction.
